Hi,
I absolutely LOVE knabstruppers and it is my lifelong dream to breed top quality knabstruppers for dressage, show jumping, and eventing. I found one that is a beautiful few spot colt as a stallion and eventing prospect. He is a yearling. I am going to get help training him, but what equipment would I need for training him on the ground. I know what I would need for starting to ride him.

You will need the basic equipment. A halter, bridle, longe line, longe whip, a light saddle (and maybe a surcingle), and probably a lead rope. There is special equipment made for yearlings, that can prevent them from bucking and rearing, as young horses tend to do.
To break him, you’ll need a lot of patience and time. Start with a halter, then slowly move up to maybe a bridle. First let him get used to just the bridle, no bit. Then just take the bit and put it up to his mouth, and if he lets you, gently slide it in. This might take a couple of tries, but you’ll eventually get it. Don’t be rough and frustrated with him, that’ll just make him an unhappy stallion, which could turn out bad. I would consult with a professional trainer and have him/her give you some tips on how to train your yearling.

Horse riding is a phenomenal experience and the right type of horse tack equipment can add worth to it. Apart from choosing halter, stirrup, bridle, martingale and other products, you need to choose the horse saddles with great care. Since riding styles differ, there is a consistent demand for different types of saddles. It actually does not matter, whether you are a Western rider or an English rider, you just need to learn the most yielding tips to buy the equipments, to suit your style.
First, Learn Their Uses
For most of the horse-riders, pony saddles are nothing more than a necessary riding gear. Before you go out shopping, it is important for you to learn about the various advantages of these saddles, to make a perfect selection:
• Saddles are required to provide comfort while riding, the bony back horses.
• Relaxed riding posture is achieved by this saddle which also keeps your body aligned while riding.
• Horse saddles are significant in improving the performance of the horse.
• Especially for those choosing Western saddles, these equipments are like an extra support.

Take into Account the Comfort of Horse
Apart from evaluating the Western tack and English saddles for your comfort level, make sure you take into account the comfort level of your horse as well. Precisely measure the width and other dimensions of these equipments to give a perfect fit to your horse’s back. Make sure, it fits all the spots on the back of your horse. If you are a novice rider, take suggestions from an experienced rider.
Different Types of Saddles
• Available in different varieties, Western saddles are of many types, to offer different comfort levels. While ranch saddles offer a deep seat, roping saddles offer thick horn for secure fit. At the same time endurance saddles are lightweight and can withstand appreciable miles in a day.
1. English saddles have a light weight and are designed with simple looks. Hunt saddles and dressage saddles are two main types of products in this category.
• Apart from those mentioned above, third types of saddles are getting popular among horse riders. Known as Australian saddles, these products offers design along with the combination of features offered by the above two categories.

How About Used Saddles
While majority of horse riders opt for new pony saddles, there are others, who prefer to buy used horse gears. Make sure you examine the used horse tack equipment before spending money on it. To be on the safer side, you should opt for a brand new saddle and buy the best horse riding gear.
Your choice for a horse saddle can make a huge difference, especially when you are a novice horse rider. Make sure you shop right equipment, from the right place to cherish the rewarding horse riding experience.

i’m writing a story about life on a farm and i am sadly lacking in horse lingo. when you’re getting ready to ride a horse, i know you’re saddling up (or something like that) but i don’t know much besides that except that:
a saddle is the thing you sit on with the horn (which you hold) and the stirrups which you put your feet in.
a bridle is ???
reins attach to the bit (goes in the horse’s mouth) and are used to direct a horse unless it’s trained to respond to your movements. (what’s that called?)
a lead rope is a rope you put on the horse (around the neck, or connected to the bit?) to lead it around (always on the horse’s left)
what else is there?
thanks.
thanks to the first answerer, but you added some more questions.
headstall?
halter? i’ve heard that one but i forgot to mention it.

and it’s western riding. thanks for the help so far

saddling up (tacking up)
horn (saddle horn)
bridle (attached to the bit & to the headstall)
responding to movements (trained to use feet)
lead rope (attached to halter to lead horse around with)
you might add more details about if you’re riding english or western because there’s a whole different set of tack for each saddle.
hope i helped

I dont want to order things from online. Thanks!

oh, and please add links!

Petsmart sold their company, State Line Tack. State Line Tack is now operating under a new company, but it’s still http://www.statelinetack.com/ . There are no more retail stores for them, unless there is a local Petsmart who has not yet clearanced all their Equine items.

There is also Dover Saddlery. They have a few retail locations, check the website for locations. http://www.doversaddlery.com/

I know there are others(these are English)… Libertyville Saddle Shop www.saddleshop.com, Beval www.beval.com, and lots more, do a search for tack stores, horse riding equipment, etc and you will come up with tons of places. Also, you may have local tack shops…you’ll have to look in your phone book or ask around.

I have just been accepted for the national diploma of horse care and management, and would like to pre-buy some books in order to read and get enough money together to buy them. Also I would like to know what equipment is needed for the diploma. I am taking the riding route. Any opinions on the course are also welcome.
Jess

I did the same course a few years ago. The equiptment needed will vary from college to college and they should send you a pack with equiptment included reccomended books, however I will add below the main items I got most use out of

Hat (to current standard)
Body Protecter
Riding gloves
Riding boots (leather boots, leather gaiters) we were allowed swede chaps for duties but had to be leather for riding, however this may not be the case where your going
shirts, polo shirts, tie
grooming kit, hair net, jodpurs (navy, black, beige )

As for books these are the books I used to most…
- Equine Nutrition and Feeding – David Frape
- The Horse: Fitness and Competition – Julie Brega
– Equine Exercise Physiology – k. Nankervis & D.Marlin

If you are taking BHS exams I reccomend using 2 sets of books – the Maxine cave and the Hazel Reed. I find they really complement each other as the Hazel Reed are simple and easy to read, covering all main aspects and the Maxine Cave books are crammed with all the informationy ou need.

In regards to buying books I would advise you wait until you atart college (unless the college reccomends a book or two) as I found the liberary had plenty of copies and some books you use tonnes for a single assignement but will rarely read again. If you are going to buy some books check the college as old students might be selling a bundle of second hand books, or check ebay.

Good luck on your course, I hope you enjoy it as I did.

Horse Saddle: I am the lovely piece of work placed on the horse’s back for riders to sit upon. I ensure stability for both the rider and the horse, and distribute the weight of the rider evenly on the horse’s back. I come in many different forms, numerous enough to make your head spin. My variations are shaped in regards to location [in terms of English, Australian, Western, German etc], tree types [in terms of Wade, flex Tree, treeless etc], production technique [handmade custom or manufactured], materials [Leather or synthetic], activity [parading, roping, show, endurance, racing, trail, reining etc] etc.

English Saddle: I am the saddle used to ride horses in “English riding” disciplines world wide. Though with an English background, I am not limited in use by English speaking countries or in England alone. I have features that make me unique and stand out as envy in the equestrian world. My Stirrups can be detached from the saddle [in case of an emergency]. I have a piece of equipment known as a girth, which is used to keep me in place on a horse. It passes under the barrel of the equine, usually attached to me on both sides by two or three leather straps called billets. My rare end has a subtle and not-too-obvious feature known as the cantle. This is used to provide greater comfort and security to riders. I generally cover a smaller surface area, yet have proven to be more effective with simplicity. Much of the weight bearing area in me is supported by a large internal flocking inside the panels.

Australian saddle: I am the saddle used for activities requiring long hours on the horse. I came as a variation of the English saddle eons ago, but have soon developed my own uniqueness as time went by. I have a distinct feature known as the Knee pad [aka 'poleys'] to provide security for riders who ride in rough conditions & spend long hours on horses. The ‘poleys’ are usually located around a rider’s thigh in front of the saddle. I was designed to cater for the conditions ranging from soothing to the harshest. My seats are deeper than the typical English saddle and my cantle higher. I am kept on with a girth attached to the billets under the flaps.

Western Saddle: I am the saddle used for Western Riding in the United States of America, mainly in the ‘western’ part. I am often tagged with the ‘cowboy’ name. I was designed to provide both security & comfort to riders and their horses traveling long hours in harsh environment. I fancy being flashy and different, I tend not to like ’simplicity’, because I pride myself at being unique and robust. I don’t call my girths ‘girths’ [you bet] but cinch. My Stirrups cannot be detached from me in an emergency, but instead I have a wider tread; combined with the rider’s high-heeled boots. The design minimizes the risk that the rider will slip through the stirrups during a fall, and the rider being dragged. My cantle is one of the most obvious of all horse saddles, providing greater comfort and security. I cover a wider surface area than the Typical English or Australian saddle. My cinch is tied on with a flat strap of leather or nylon known as a latigo. I have no padding between the tree and the external leather and fleece skirting… Okay, okay, it seems I brag a lot, but really, I am truly unique because I am the most ‘modified’ and truly customized to suit rider’s tastes. And I am often used for ’show’ purposes. Yeah, I show-off a lot! But there are no ‘best’ kinds of saddles anywhere, only suitable and familiar ones.

Horse: I am the tamed animal Humans ride upon. I know not of western, English, Australian, Portuguese, German or even youth saddles. I only know it when my back hurts if the seating equipment placed on it pokes my spine or is not properly fitted- I ‘neighhhhhhh’ at the rider, indicating pain and discomfort- and I know when it does not. I love humans, and would give my full agility and beauty to the ones who seat on me properly.
