Now firmly established in the U.S. market place as one of the most popular forms of outdoor wear, the introduction of outback styled clothing first made it’s initial appearance several years ago.

It all began with the 1986 movie hit “Crocodile Dundee”, when a rough and tumble Aussie by the name of Mick Dundee won the hearts of millions with his quick wit, cavalier attitude, and heroic antics. What also caught people’s attention in the blockbuster film that year were the rugged, yet stylish clothes that Mick was wearing. With his black leather hat adorned with crocodile teeth, sturdy walkabout pants, and alligator vest displaying his manly chest, Dundee portrayed the quintessential Australian outback hero.

Shortly after the release of the legendary film, people began appearing on the streets of America wearing similar hats, vests, and pants, and the surge of Australian outback fashion was in full swing.

What started as a trendy spin-off of a bigger than life character soon found it’s way into the mainstream world of fashion in a more practical sense. People began to realize that not only was outback clothing stylish, but it also provided the wearer superb protection from the elements.

One such group were the millions of horseback riders who discovered that oilskin coats offered the perfect solution for riding apparel . Providing the ultimate in cold and wet weather protection, Duster oilskin coats are generously cut to allow freedom of movement, especially across the back and shoulders. They are also equipped with an extension in the back of the garment to protect the seat of the horse rider’s saddle, in addition to leg straps to keep the coat securely in place during strong wind, and sleeves that are extra long to protect the arms while extended.

And for summer riding, lightweight outback hats with their wide brims and ample ventilation provide an excellent safeguard from the damaging effects of the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

Infused with a unique natural oil based formula, outback oilskin apparel offers outstanding defense against sun, wind, snow, and rain. Oilskin coats, jackets, hats and pants provide an impenetrable water barrier that keeps you bone dry and able to keep riding, even through the heaviest rain.

Not limited just to Equestrians, hikers, campers, and motorcycle enthusiasts also began to utilize the exceptional weather resistant qualities of outback clothing, establishing it as one of the most stylish and effective forms of waterproof outerwear available.

I want to start showing doing beginner stuff (walk, trot, canter) and I was wondering if there are any websites where I can find local horseback riding shows. I live in Virginia.

Also where can I find cheap show clothes? (english riding)

AND, how can I be less nervous for shows?

Thanks so much~
I’m 13 and I don’t have horrible nerves just like butterflys and worrying that something will go wrong. Things like that.

Google training shows in Virginia. I belong to a horse forum called equestrianlife.com and they display all shows in all states. I don’t know about Virginia, but here in Florida we could wear a polo, tan breeches, paddock boots and half chaps for training shows. Since starting to show, I’ve picked up sale show clothes every chance I got from www.doversaddlery.com. Just hit up all the tack websites and see what they have on sale. I know Ricks Heritage is having a huge sale this weekend. I know that’s not a whole lotta help. I just picked up one thing at a time. Plus, you really don’t have to have the top of the line stuff for lower level shows. It’s not terribly expensive for starter stuff.

I wish I could help you with the nerve question. I have panic disorder to begin with. I puke at every show before entering the ring and I’m still doing training shows! My trainer has suggested liquid Valerian Root under your tongue the morning of the show. I can’t use it myself because of other medication I take. You might want to check with your doctor or Ask A Nurse before trying a herbal remedy. I’ve heard the Valerian Root stuff works though. Good Luck!

To be sure try them on in the store. My size all changes when it comes to brands. Also once you get breeches(which help a ton) get half chaps. They help you grip. I wear breeches because they are really comfortable for ride in. only get half chaps ir you are not wearing tall boots. Hope i helped!

I took lessons for several years from some family friends. I don’t think it was any discipline really, just how to stay on a horse and stuff. We did a bit of trail riding. I think they were good lessons, just not any particular sport.

So… I’m thinking about taking lessons at a local stable. Basically for fun and exercise. I’m not really interested in competing at this time, but maybe in the future I will if I keep it up and competition sounds interesting.

Definitely don’t want to buy clothes at this time. I know several sports require you to have specific outfits. But do they require that for lessons or just for competitions?

Any suggestions?
I don’t have any friends who live around me who ride horses. I don’t have a horse, so I’d be using the stable’s horse.

For english riders usually the first discipline you work towards is dressage because it’s all flat work and jumping comes along later in lessons at a riding school. Saying that my first shows were showjumping and equitation then showing and THEN dressage, mainly because I don’t find it as much of an adrenaline rush and I was already jumping a fair bit in lessons before I had my first sane horse.
I don’t know any riding schools or freelance instructors that require you to wear showing attire in a lesson, they just need you to wear a hat to required standards and riding boots as soon as you can get hold of them (sorry I’m UK based so I might be talking nonsense if you’re from somewhere else!)

I’m not just like some loser who decided, hey I’m gonna go ride a horse. I put a lot of thought (and several hours of begging) into this decision, so I want to make sure I don’t end up looking like a loser when I actually start.

Thanks.

For everyday riding and lessons your going to need paddock boots, riding breeches, half chaps, and a helmet. If you want to get more serious into riding and showing you will need other things, like tall boots, show shirt, and show jacket. I will provide links for you to show you what everything is and looks like. You don’t have to get exactly what I show you though, it’s just an example of one.

Paddock Boots: (these are the ones I have, they are amazing!)

http://doversaddlery.com/ariat-heritage-ii-lace-paddock-boots/p/X1-38342/cn/11/

Breeches:

http://doversaddlery.com/on-course-cotton-naturals-pull-on-riding-breeches/p/X1-3598/cn/2/

Half Chaps: (I have these and I love them, they are really comfortable)

http://doversaddlery.com/dublin-comfort-suede-original-half-chaps/p/X1-35533/cn/1934/

Helmet: (I have this one. I wouldn’t recommend it for showing though)

http://www.doversaddlery.com/product.asp?pn=X1-36018&ids=695399788

I don’t show but this is show stuff you will need:
Tall Boots: (I have these field boots for fox hunting)

http://www.doversaddlery.com/product.asp?pn=X1-38484&ids=695400229

Show Shirt:

http://www.doversaddlery.com/r.j.-classics-essential-short-sleeve-show-shirt/p/X1-20372/cn/4632/

Show Jacket:

http://www.doversaddlery.com/tuff-rider-show-coat/p/X1-40207/cn/35/

As you can see, riding apparel gets very expensive. I have shown you a lot of the cheaper items because you are just starting out, you don’t need any of the huge brand name expensive things. Also, some words of advice, *You Get What You Pay For*. If it’s really cheap, it’s most likely not very good quality and won’t last you very long.

Good luck!

You’re cruising down your favorite country road on what started out to be a text-book-perfect day for riding. Without warning, the sky turns an ominous shade of grey. A huge menacing cloud , swollen and black, suddenly releases a torrent of rain. In a matter of moments you’re drenched and shivering from the cold….

Like most seasoned bikers, I’ve been searching in vain for the the ideal rain-gear to protect myself from the elements without having to compromise on freedom of movement. Luckily a few months back, a friend, who is an avid horseback rider, turned me on to the perfect solution. The oilskin coat:

From it’s humble beginning as the monsoon cape worn hundreds of years ago by sailors worldwide, Australian oilskin coats, jackets and pants have evolved into the emblem of those looking for the ultimate in harsh weather protection.

It all began in 1890 when a Scottish sailor by the name of Edward LeRoy discovered that torn sails from his ship could be recycled into long coats by treating the canvas material with a mixture of various oils. This transformed them into superb wet weather gear.

Word spread land-side about the effectiveness of LeRoy’s coats in rain and cold, and settlers of the outback acquired this legendary waterproof material to protect themselves from the severe weather of the Australian Bush.

The oilskin coat was further adapted to life inland by adding an extension in the back of the garment to protect the seat of the horse rider’s saddle, in addition to leg straps to keep the coat securely in place during strong wind, and sleeves that were extra long to protect the arms while extended.

Continuing on with this tradition, modern oilskin clothing is designed with the same wet weather-proofing techniques in mind.

Made of tightly woven 100% cotton that is infused with a unique natural oil based formula, oilskin apparel offers maximum defense against snow, wind, and rain. Oilskin coats, jackets and pants provide an impenetrable water barrier that keeps you bone dry and able to keep riding, even through the heaviest rain.

Unlike many synthetics this material also has a very natural feel, and offers excellent breath-ability, allowing body moisture to escape, ensuring the driest ride possible.

The drawstring waist and gusseted rear vent enables you to slip the jacket over the back so water runs off the bike, leaving your seat dry. Snap together straps also secures the coat around your legs when the wind kicks up.

And since the oil blend is not water soluble, any incidence of water touching the fabric simply runs off, ensuring total weather protection for motorcyclists who need to stay warm and dry, even under the most challenging conditions.

If you’re just starting out, you won’t need to buy everything. However, you should get
1. a horseback riding helmet (no bike helmets since these won’t hold out if you fall off)-These range anywhere from around 30 or 40 dollars to over 200 dollars. you won’t need anything too fancy.
2. riding boots- You can ride in sneakers, but the boots are really a lot more comfortable, and they help you keep your foot in the stirrups better.
3. Riding Breeches- These are special riding pants that are supposed to fit really tight. You can ride in jeans if you want, but once you try these, you’ll find they’re a lot more comfortable.

* In addition to all of this, you can also purchase your own riding crop (whip) and spurs (once you know how to use them). SmartPakEquine.com is a really good website. you can also order their catalog. They have a ton of stuff from horsey gear to your own gear from a lot of different brands. Hope this helps!
