Where Can I Find Horse Shows? PLEASE HELP! ?
I want to start showing doing beginner stuff (walk, trot, canter) and I was wondering if there are any websites where I can find local horseback riding shows. I live in Virginia.
Also where can I find cheap show clothes? (english riding)
AND, how can I be less nervous for shows?
Thanks so much~ ![]()
I’m 13 and I don’t have horrible nerves just like butterflys and worrying that something will go wrong. Things like that.
Google training shows in Virginia. I belong to a horse forum called equestrianlife.com and they display all shows in all states. I don’t know about Virginia, but here in Florida we could wear a polo, tan breeches, paddock boots and half chaps for training shows. Since starting to show, I’ve picked up sale show clothes every chance I got from www.doversaddlery.com. Just hit up all the tack websites and see what they have on sale. I know Ricks Heritage is having a huge sale this weekend. I know that’s not a whole lotta help. I just picked up one thing at a time. Plus, you really don’t have to have the top of the line stuff for lower level shows. It’s not terribly expensive for starter stuff.
I wish I could help you with the nerve question. I have panic disorder to begin with. I puke at every show before entering the ring and I’m still doing training shows! My trainer has suggested liquid Valerian Root under your tongue the morning of the show. I can’t use it myself because of other medication I take. You might want to check with your doctor or Ask A Nurse before trying a herbal remedy. I’ve heard the Valerian Root stuff works though. Good Luck!
horseback riding breeches help?
idk what size i am in breeches im about 4"11 ish my waist is like 26 inches i am usually a size 10 in kids in normal clothes…. so wat size breeches do i need no rude answersss please just a question
To be sure try them on in the store. My size all changes when it comes to brands. Also once you get breeches(which help a ton) get half chaps. They help you grip. I wear breeches because they are really comfortable for ride in. only get half chaps ir you are not wearing tall boots. Hope i helped!
I’m thinking about taking horseback riding lessons. Which discipline or sport would you recommend?
I took lessons for several years from some family friends. I don’t think it was any discipline really, just how to stay on a horse and stuff. We did a bit of trail riding. I think they were good lessons, just not any particular sport.
So… I’m thinking about taking lessons at a local stable. Basically for fun and exercise. I’m not really interested in competing at this time, but maybe in the future I will if I keep it up and competition sounds interesting.
Definitely don’t want to buy clothes at this time. I know several sports require you to have specific outfits. But do they require that for lessons or just for competitions?
Any suggestions?
I don’t have any friends who live around me who ride horses. I don’t have a horse, so I’d be using the stable’s horse.
For english riders usually the first discipline you work towards is dressage because it’s all flat work and jumping comes along later in lessons at a riding school. Saying that my first shows were showjumping and equitation then showing and THEN dressage, mainly because I don’t find it as much of an adrenaline rush and I was already jumping a fair bit in lessons before I had my first sane horse.
I don’t know any riding schools or freelance instructors that require you to wear showing attire in a lesson, they just need you to wear a hat to required standards and riding boots as soon as you can get hold of them (sorry I’m UK based so I might be talking nonsense if you’re from somewhere else!)
