I have a wonderful pair of Tuffrider insulated breeches. I got them out of a magazine. Don't order off of the TuffRider website because they are like 70 dollars and I got mine for like thirty five or something. I LOVE mine. I had a pair for three years before I had to get another pair and they are very stretchy so even when I had my growth spurt they still fit. Another idea would be to wear a pair of breeches under neath jeans to act as long underwear. It doesn't give you much movement though, so make sure you have a mounting block to get on! If you just want to buy one pair of breeches get a normal pair and wear long underwear under them or wear jeans over them. It's cold where i live now too so i have developed many ways of staying warm. If you don't want to buy breeches you don't have too. If you are comfortable riding in jeans go ahead. Hope this Helps!
References :
you will want a jacket (not too long), breeches/jeans (depending your sport), and paddock/tall boots. if you get paddock boots, you'll want half chaps to prevent your legs from getting pinched by the stirrup leathers and chaps are grippier. you don't want a jacket too long or else it will get caught under your body when you ride, and it can be annoying.
be sure to wear lots of layers; it'll help you keep you warm when you ride
and don't forget toe heaters! they help!
References :
living and riding in freezing temperatures for 6 years.

Don't buy any riding gear for a month or so, just in case you decide you don't like it.. It can happen.

Wear a comfy pair of jeans, a shoe or boot with some type of heel (Not reqiured but it is better) and anything that will keep you warm but something you are able to move in..

After you are sure you will stick with the riding, then you can go ahead and buy riding pants. People at the stores will help you buy the type (jodphurs or breeches) that is best for you. I would personally get it in tan so that you can wear them for show too, without having to buy two pairs.

Have fun riding, welcome to the rest of your life!
References :
You can buy special winter breeches, so I would go with those. Foot and hand warmers would also be a good addition. It's around 30 degrees where I am, and I wear winter breeches (Kerrits has a nice pair), riding socks, foot warmers, boots, half chaps, long sleeve shirt, light sweatshirt, riding jacket, gloves, helmet, and a warm helmet cover. Good luck with starting riding!
References :
Well, first things first, it depends on if you'll be riding English or Western. If you're riding Western, jeans. If you're riding English, breeches are what are normally worn.

However, if you're just starting out, you don't know if you'll be sticking with it forever. Plus, you don't know if you'll be growing or not, and breeches can be expensive. I would start out wearing jeans (not baggy jeans, tighter jeans are better for better contact with the horse) and boots with a heel (that's a NECESSITY). Eventually, if you've been riding for a year or two and you're sure that you want to stick with it, go ahead and buy your self a pair or two of breeches.

Hope that helps!
References :
you can ride in jeans, but if you have an instructor that wants their students to ride in breeches then you may have to go purchase them. i ride in jeans (thickerish ones in winter) because they're cheap and durable. as for advice for a beginner rider; always be aware that you're dealing with an animal, heals down & toes up while riding, and to listen to your instructor! listening to your instructor is the best advice i can give you, they know what they're doing, so pay attention. oh, and don't be afraid to ask questions!
References :
riding, training, showing for 11 years

i#' 26 and i always wear jeans or johds. your best bet if it's really cold are jods witha pair of tights underneath - also helps stop chaffing as well as keeping you warm.

on top yuo can wrap up as warm as you like.

gloves are you rbest friend. you can get great woollen ones with rubber pimples on teh palm and fingers for grip - they're really cheap too. only a couple of bucks.
References :
You can wear jeans, tall riding boots would be a better buy, I think. They will keep your legs warm and protected. If it's really cold, under armor works great, you can get shirt and pants. Wear something to keep your head warm too. Just stay calm and listen to you instructor. You will have a great time!
