Are all Stallions male or can they be female as well?
I’m starting a new job as a Stable Hand with limited experience, and my new "boss" told me at the interview that stallions can be either male or female, and they have not been gelded.
I’ve been doing a bit of research, and every site I’ve been on tells me stallions can only be males, that are not fixed. Can somebody clear up this confusion please?
What kind of idiot is your boss? a stallion is an ungelded male – END OF DISCUSSION.
Stallions are always "unfixed" males. fixed are geldings, females are fillys or mares.

Ummm weird they are males uncut…Never heard of anyone referring to a mare that way.

yeaa they can only b males, if the stallions fixed then it would b an it.. i guess.

Stallions are all MALE. They are horses that have not been gelded. So they still have their testicles in tack. You cannot really "fix" a mare. It is a large invasive surgry that would cost a lot and be really hard on the horse. I have never heard of it being done. So all you have is mares-female horses. I think I would be a little scared about your new employer and their knowledge of horses.

stallion is just another name for am unfixed male horse

hahahahha does your boss ACTUALLY own a barn?
someone get him out of there, now!
stallions are ungelded males. gelding is where they basically cut out the males’ testicles. and last time i checked, females did not have boy parts.

I think he was pulling your leg and wanted you to research horses so he said this very wierd theory to have you read all bout horses to find the answer that really has no answer.

Perhaps there was a miscommunication. If not, get another job. This boss knows nothing about horses or he is really pulling one over on you and that is not very nice.

Stallion’s are male, purely male, not castrated or anything. If it’s fixed, then it’s a gelding

You are starting as a stable hand with "limited" experience?
If you have any experience at all you should know that your new boss is a moron.
A stallion or stud is male horse, PERIOD!
A gelding is a stallion or stud that has been castrated, PERIOD!
I do NOT mean to be rude & I know everyone has to learn sometime, but exactly how "limited" is your experience & what will you be doing?

I would ask your new boss if they were testing your knowledge or pulling your leg. But if they were being serious, then I would find a new job. Nothing good will come from your employment there for obvious reasons not to mention that I feel that is was rude and totally disrepectful to you, regardless of your knowledge and experience level. Any true experienced horse person in a position of managing others would never blantantly abuse new comers. Good luck in finding another barn to work at.

Maybe you misunderstood. All stallions are MALE!!!

I think you misunderstood your boss.
Stallion = Unneutered MALE horse.
Gelding = Neutered (Castrated) MALE horse
Mare = FEMALE horse
Got it?

A stallion is an uncut male…END OF STORY!!
The ONLY other thing I can think of…would be a hermaphrodite. A horse born with both male and female genitalia.
Stallion NEVER refers to a female.
I think your prospective employer is either a total idiot…or has a mean streak to make you feel stupid. Believe it…there are some sickos out there that get their jollies by giving false information…and getting a laugh out of beginners that don’t know any better.
Cookies for you for researching it!! Shows you want to learn. Always question and do some research for yourself. I still think it’s low though…you’re there to learn…and someone is trying to jerk you around.

I agree with most about your boss being a dumba**. All non-gelded male horses are called stallions. I know this from growing up around my dad and breeding stallion to mare to get foals. I watched it done as a kid but never asked him. I almost bought a gelding, which is a castrated MALE horse. For Pete’s sake, your boss should be kicked in the butt for thinking a mare can be "gelded"…sheesh.

A guelding is a basically a neutered male horse. Pretty much, breeders use stallions to breed.I grew up with horses and have not heard of a female stallion. I had a buckskin mare (female horse) and my sister had a gelded palamino. I’m not sure if your new boss is testing you or not.

I agree with one of the other persons who answered….your boss cannot be serious, he is either teasing or testing you…a stallion can be nothing else but a male horse WITH his testicles, (One that CAN reproduce.). Yes, a mare can be spayed, but that has nothing to do with this question…to transform a stallion into a gelding, you remove his testicles, making him a gelding, (a male horse that cannot reproduce)

Your "boss" misdirected you. Stallions can ONLY be a male horse that has not yet been fixed. A fixed or castrated male is called a gelding and a female horse is called a mare.
