and also what are some good websites that will give me information on jobs available in the Performance Horse Industry?
I can definitely help you in this field. Find the discipline you are interested in and look up there website. For instance if you choose reining, go to www.nrha.com; they have a directory of professionals. My thing is a three way interest between Reining, Cutting and Reined Cow Horse (these are the main three performance fields). I was lucky enough to find one professional who did/does all of that, Jon L. Ingram. Actually I’m with two professionals because his son, Seth, works with him. All the major performance horse associations have websites with information on the registered professionals who teach that particular discipline. Cutting is the NCHA, Reining is the NRHA, and Cow Horse is the NRCHA. Google those acronyms and you’ll be able to find everything you need.
As for the qualifications, you can’t get those just by taking a course on a website or something, those can take years and years to achieve. My advice is to do what I’m doing and seek out an apprenticeship with the professional and discipline you choose.
First, you should volunteer at a good local rescue for oh, six months. That would be an excellent reference later on.
Then, it really depends on where you live. If you happen to be like me, and live near Lexington KY, the horse park is a good place to get a job to work your way up. Especially with the world equestrian games coming out in a year, if you have a job there you will have an opportunity to meet some people that might be able to open a few doors for you.
